Winslow’s Home is a unique restaurant dedicated to providing fresh and local foods. How fresh is it? A lot of the produce comes straight from their own garden, into the kitchen, and on to our plates. It’s a great sit down restaurant, but they also sell a range of other items from baked goods to cool home decor.
Overall Rating ★★★
Food ★★★★
Their menu consists of breakfast entrees, sandwiches, meats, vegetable dishes, soups, and salads. They also have dinner specials that change daily depending on the season and what’s growing fresh in their garden.
Their large display case of baked goods are made fresh daily and constantly changing. We were told that they occasionally have gluten free options, but unfortunately we came on the wrong day and didn’t get to try these. While we can’t tell you how the rest of the baked items tasted, they looked and smelled delicious and we’d love to hear your feedback!
As usual, we decided to order a few items to share. We went with the Egg White Frittata, Mezze Plate, seasonal Squash Salad, and Grapefruit Brulee. The frittata was probably our favorite dish with the Mezze coming in a close second. The Mezze plate, or Mediterranean plate, was made up of pita bread slices, cooked beets, olives, feta cheese, hummus, and quinoa. We obviously dunked the pita into the hummus and pilled on the toppings to get all the flavors in each bite.
The Grapefruit Brulee served for us as a healthy “dessert”. It was a grapefruit cut in half and served warm with a side of creme fraiche sauce. Not a mixture that I would have thought of myself, but the combination of tart and sweet was brilliant. It was a bit tricky to cut the grapefruit pieces out of a warm grapefruit, but it was definitely worth the sticky hands.
Tried and True Favorites:
- Seasonal Quiche
- Breakfast Burrito (With or Without Tortilla)
- Smoked Salmon Hash
- Grapefruit Brulee
Quality ★★★
As described on their website, Winslow’s 5 acre farm is located about 35 miles outside of St. Louis in Augusta, Missouri. This allows them to provide customers with local and fresh produce not found in many grocery stores. They grow a variety of season and organic fruits, herbs, vegetables, and flowers.
They use eggs from Kuhs Farm which are from free range chicken so that was a bonus and their meat all come from grass fed, pastured animals. In case you aren’t aware, grass fed meat is much more nutritious than meat from mass produced animals who never see the light of day.
As well as using high quality ingredients, they also are very eco-friendly, composting and recycling as much as possible.
The oils that they use for baking and cooking are a mixture of non-organic olive and canola oils. Unfortunately, canola oils are mostly all genetically modified and very inflammatory to the body so this was our one complaint.
To summarize, although not all of their ingredients are organic, they definitely are making an effort to provide high quality foods to their customers whenever possible. They certainly are steps ahead of most restaurants in terms of quality.
Atmosphere ★★
The restaurant is one large room with tables, a coffee station, and a bakery counter, all divided up throughout the space. The walls are covered in shelves which display their cool house items that you can look through and purchase while waiting for your meal. Although there is a lot going on for one room, it didn’t feel cluttered or overwhelming.
Service ★★
The service here was good and the workers were very helpful in answering our many questions regarding food sources and preparation. We were seated almost immediately and our waiter was very good about replenishing our water and checking up on us. There was nothing extraordinary about the service, but it was good to say the least.
Price $$
The prices were reasonable for most items on the menu, but there were a few things I probably wouldn’t spend money on again. Although the Grapefruit Brulee was delicious, it seemed a tad expensive considering it was only a cooked grapefruit with a side of sauce.
