City Coffee House and Creperie is one of the many STL restaurants jumping on the gluten free crepe bandwagon, and we have to say, it’s a good bandwagon to be on. This Clayton cafe serves a variety of salads, coffees, and breakfast foods, but they are most well know for their crepes! The thing that makes them special is that their organic buckwheat batter can replace EVERY regular crepe for just an extra $1 charge.
If you are ever craving a crepe, whether for a meal or a quick snack, or just want to put something in your mouth that tastes like heaven, this is the place to go! Unlike many other creperies we’ve been to in the past, this one is not cheap with the fillings. You get some in every bite and rarely get a dry piece (which wouldn’t even be that bad because I once ordered a plain crepe just for the buckwheat flavor).
Our favorite crepe so far is the Provence crepe, filled with chewy brie cheese and walnuts and topped with sweet grapes and strawberries. We also highly recommend the Freedom crepe, served with strawberries, blueberries, and creme fraiche, and the Apple-Cinnamon and Brown Sugar crepe. Let be honest, we’ve tried a lot of crepes here by now and have yet to be disappointed.
Our only complaint would be that besides the organic buckwheat batter, they really don’t use any other organic or high quality ingredients. But they’re so good that we can justify the pesticides once in a while!
